Shh!

‘Shh!’ She said,

It’s almost time,

Your dad will be home,

By and by.’

‘Hush’, said the children,

‘Let us hurry!

Keep our toys in place,

Oh, do let us scurry.

For dad may enter,

Upset at the rain.

Or be cross with dinner, the news,

Or grumble at the mess we’ve made!’

It’s true, their dad would be home soon,

Bringing with him a pall of gloom.

It’s true he’d  bathe, then sit

 in his rocking chair,

But even while home,

He’s never ever quite all there!
